Cup Win, Ed. 12: the Club facts

Croky Cup

Two goals by Vermant made sure Club claimed a 12th Cup win in its already rich history. 2-1 was the final score, just like it was ten years ago when Club also lifted the trophy in Brussels. Here are the facts and figures of last Sunday's game.

The Fixture

Scoring a brace in the Final, Romeo Vermant single-handedly made sure the Cup was to make its way to Bruges again. The two goals help his tally to ten in 49 offical games at Blue & Black. His father, Sven Vermant, already paved the way by scoring in the Cup Final of 1995 against Germinal Ekeren.

Illustrious Club players the likes of Pierre Carteus (1970), Raoul Lambert (1970), Roger Davies (1977), Jean-Pierre Papin (1986) and Mario Stanić (1996) all scored twice in a Cup Final for Club, outdone by Andrés Mendoza: he scored three against Mouscron in 2002.

What an assist by Hugo Siquet to open the score — his second of the year for Club. Christos Tzolis provided the assist for the second goal, making it his 13th, three of them in the cup.

With 40 Cup ties, Brandon Mechele enters the Top 10 at Club (including the ligabeker):

  1. Franky Van der Elst (67 cup games for Club)
  2. Jan Ceulemans (59)
  3. Dany Verlinden (53)
  4. Fons Bastijns (51)

  7. Vital Borkelmans (43)
  8. Raoul Lambert (41)
  9. Hans Vanaken (41)
  10. Brandon Mechele (40)

Having won the league title, made it to the Conference League Semis and to the Champions League Round of 16, coach Nicky Hayen now also adds a Belgian Cup to his impressive track record. Hayen is the 7th coach at Club claiming both the league title and the cup with Club Brugge (Michel Preud'homme, Trond Sollied, Hugo Broos, Georges Leekens, Henk Houwaart and Ernst Happel).

For the fourth time, Club crossed swords with RSC Anderlecht in the Final, coming out on top on three occasions now.
